OpenLight's News

Posted by OpenLight - January 30th, 2011

I'll just say I have no clue how to collab with anyone. The best idea I have is to take a partially completed song that someone wrote and add stuff, like a solo and harmony. Aside from that, I have no clue.

On another note, I do know how to remix. I don't know when I'll do my next one though. It may be a while. However, anyone is open to use or remix my stuff. I'd be all for that, haha.

Let's see if I can make any more songs this year, haha.

I've been sick and a half the past few days, so forgive my inactivity... and prepare for more.

I'm pretty freaking burned out on music making after my Traveler's Journey thing. Remind me never to tackle a 4 part series in a matter of 3 or 4 days again. Therefore, because I'm so burned out, I'll step back for a while. I'll keep lurking around awesome composers like drew6464 and RetromanOMG, and always feel free to message me!

First and foremost, I made a contest. http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/12 22982 Please participate or comment on the post.

Anyway, I'm starting my own (kinda my own at least) song series (again). Of course, I've made 2 versions of "Passion Modified" and 3 versions of "Quick Descent," but not like that. More like RetromanOMG's Revenant series and Monsters series. Of course, "Walk and Seek" and "Seek and Find" are related both in name and style, so I'll have at least one more song for that (probably named Find and [something]).

The series I'm starting just now is going to be based on my new song, "A Traveler's Journey." I've already mostly finished "A Traveler's Journey Pt. 2," so be watching for that. I plan on having this series soon collide with one of Retroman's series', and Pt. 2 makes it fairly clear which that is. I figure this will more than make up for the remixes he's made for me, haha.

Also, please leave comments here, and check out Dj XeMeX if you haven't already! He's just created a Facebook page, so check out his NG page for a link.

I made my name with a purpose. Much like CHR1ST14N D33J4Y, my name had some sort of Christian link (though not as obvious). I figure I may as well explain what OpenLight actually meant when I made this account over a year ago.

Of course, if you are a Christian or know a Christian, you know one of the things Christians want to be is a "light" in their community. (If you haven't heard that, you may have heard the song This Little Light of Mine.) I wanted my name to mean something, so I knew "Light" had to be part of it.

As a nondenominational Christian, essentially what I believe is that the Bible should be followed and not skewed to fit someone's particular desires. Also, I think that the Christian church should be left open for anyone who wants to be a part. Since it says in the Bible to spread the word and "good news of Jesus" (as it is commonly called), I wanted to include "Open" as well. So, since LightOpen seemed awkward, OpenLight became my name.

Of course, this account was not created for the sole purpose of ministry (as you can tell because this is the first time I've even mentioned my faith), but I wanted the name to have meaning in case anyone were to ever ask me.

I'd like my music to be heard and enjoyed, but not as a means to make me popular or make my name known. If I ever got talented enough to rise up in popularity, my goal would be to give the credit to Jesus for both blessing me with a background in music (I've played violin since I was 9 and piano (not with lessons, so I'm not that good haha) since I was a bit younger) and for giving me the ability to become popular so that I could make Him popular.

That's OpenLight.

Ok here you guys go! Merry Christmas!

Solo Contest Results:

1. SC: New Amp
2. _Apprehension_
3. Open Light Solo
4. It's a shuttle
5. 3 minutes of guitar wank
6. Super Bear Solo
7. Cold Fire Solo P1
8. FS Epic Solo

Congratulations everyone!

My judgement was not entirely based on skill of composition or other musical ability, but rather originality coupled with talent. The top spots were given to those who either changed it up somewhere in the 3 minute or less time frame or just blew me away with their melodies. I disregarded instrument choice, though some of the instruments were not to my liking, and tried to focus on the solos themselves and how they both fit with the songs and kept me interested.

Well, there you go!

I'm still in the process of judging. Most of the entries were very good. Some were obviously not as good as the others, but a lot of them are difficult to judge in relation to the others.

I'll let you all know when the results are in.

I don't expect anyone to enter this for a while, though I'm still going to post the rules for this contest I'm trying to start.

Anyway, the contest is pretty simple. There are no restrictions on instrument choice or genre. The primary rule of this contest is to make a song which is under 3 minutes long that includes one or more solo(s) with any instrument. That is, you can have a synth, guitar, or even a drum solo. Just give it your all in the solo portion(s) of your song.

Note: If you can make a song that is just a solo that still sounds great, go ahead! However, the easiest way to go about this is to make a simple melody or beat and then solo over it.

If you wish to enter the contest, you can let me know here or through messaging. All entries are due December 7th! Go crazy.

So drew6464's contest is a big hit! I may have to do one later on that is far less specific than what I had before, haha. Of course, that'd be for after the announcement of who won Piano Frenzy.

If you haven't checked out the contest and the entries thus far for the contest, head over to drew6464's Newgrounds page and view the comments. So far, three people have submitted their entries for his contest. Those people are J-Ville, DjClyme, and myself. I already feel overshadowed by the talent of J-Ville and DjClyme, and of course my friend RetromanOMG is cooking something up as well, which, given the fact that he is the person who inspired me to use piano in my songs in the first place and this is a piano driven contest, makes me a little nervous that I could come in absolute last. That'd be fine with me though! I can't wait to see who wins. No doubt, the winner will surely have made some freaking amazing song.

Ha, so I'm still taking a minor break from composing, but I just noticed a contest by drew6464, so... I made a song for it. It's under 2 minutes (since it had to be for the contest), and quite honestly I'm glad it was. It still took an hour to write though.

Anyway, I'm still open for giving remixes and entering contests, just so you know. I do not plan on making any new original songs this year though (that is, outside of contest pieces). I'll be around, as I said before.

And I'd always appreciate remixes of my songs. Hahaha.

By the way, here's the contest (Piano Frenzy):
